Once you have made the decision to include children at your wedding and reception, you now must make sure that you plan to keep them entertained! For most children, the wedding ceremony can be dull, and the reception overwhelming, so plan for these special wedding guests with a little leg work ahead of time. The first thing you should do is ask your caterer if special menu items can be added for children. If you are having a sit down dinner, ask them to add a children’s entrĂ©e, like chicken fingers or spaghetti. Not only will the children’s option cost less, it allows the kids to have a meal that they will be able to eat and enjoy, especially if you are choosing a meal with a more grown up palate in mind. Adding chicken fingers and French fries on a buffet may not be an option, but your caterer can make suggestions for you if you are having a buffet meal, like serving the children at the tables instead of inviting them to the buffet. Typically, a child can find something at a buffet they will enjoy, and your caterer will likely offer you a discount for the reduced portion size children are expected to eat. At your reception, consider having a children’s table. Don’t expect that the kids will want to eat their meal there, unless they are older kids. Keep the children with their family for the meal portion, but after dinner, the children’s table should be stocked with things like crayons and coloring books, Play-doh, stickers, or even small children’s meal type toys. This will keep the kids entertained and occupied while the adults dance and mingle. If your budget allows, hire one or two babysitters to keep the children’s table stocked and supervised. A wedding is truly a family affair if you choose to include children in your special day. Just make sure that you keep them and their needs in mind when you plan the big event.
